Roger Kellaway Live at Mezzrow

Roger Kellaway Live at Mezzrow

Cellar Music Group and SmallsLIVE Foundation are excited to announce the release of Roger Kellaway Live At Mezzrow. This new live album celebrates the inimitable sound of an under-celebrated compositional master performing at the peak of his ability, over sixty years into a potent musical career. Recorded live at the iconic Mezzrow jazz club in New York City – pianist, composer and arranger Roger Kellaway conjures breath-taking musical imagery with selections from the songbooks of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn and more. Live at Mezzrow features an extraordinary lineup including Jay Leonhart on bass, Dennis Mackrel on drums, and special guest Roni Ben-Hur on guitar.

Take The A Train – Video

“Take the A Train” is one of my favorite closers. In the 1980’s I played a lot in NYC with the great Jazz Trumpeter Joe Newman. At some point in every gig, he would call Billy Strayhorn’s classic “Take the A Train”. Joe’s choice of tempo was unusually slow, and we used to laugh about it, saying “it feels like it takes a year to play one chorus!” But that slow tempo sparked a curiosity in me, and I got very excited and inspired about a musical journey with infinite possibilities. In this recording we continue the tradition. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I do!

“Roger Kellaway’s talent not only lies in his performance; beyond a certain expertise, there is a vision of musical writing and arrangements that is unique to him, never seeking to impress anyone, and ultimately, Roger subtly offers us an imaginative vision of his career, each moment of which is a true feast. This new album is a discreet delight that only asks to be listened to with passion, to become  as “indispensable” for you as it has been for me”.
